St Mary’s Wildlife Friendly Churchyard

As Spring is beginning to blossom, come and visit St Mary’s Churchyard!

The churchyard is a precious resource of ancient meadow plants with lots of insects and wildlife. The scheme is run under the guidance of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and in 2016 the project achieved a Gold Award from the Trust.

The guiding principles for the churchyard are:

  • To maintain the primary function of reverent internet interment of the deceased
  • To encourage an ecological haven for wild flowers, insects, birds and other wildlife
  • To develop a pleasant and reflective place for the bereaved, parishioners and others
  • To be an educational resource for community

Watch out for an evening being organised all about moths with an expert called Mark from the Bournemouth Natural Science Museum!
